This exhibition is thethird large-scaled academic exhibition held in Shijiazhuang Art Museumafter Things & Enlightenment –Case Study Exhibition onYe Qianyu’s Work: Series II in 2017 and Xu Beihong and His Timein 2018. The artists presented in this exhibition, when they were studying in France, learned about the classicist, realist and naturalist art of the Western academy, as well as various Western modernist schools. They brought new artistic genres, new artistic ideas and even new lifestyles, which were outside the realms of traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting, into the Chinese art circle in the 20th century. After their studies, most of them returned to China and chose art education as their lifelong career. Even till this day, their skills, techniques, and ideas have deeply influenced modern Chinese art education and are also inspirational for contemporary issues such as cultural identity and art fusion.
In his speech, Wang Chunchen, Deputy Directorof CAFA Art Museum, said that plenty of important works in the history of Chinese modern art havenever appeared in the public view, and yet the domestic public art institutionsare just beginning to improve their collection mechanism in recent years. With the strong support of more than forty public and private art institutions and private collectors, this exhibition enablesthe public to re-understand, by appreciating the original art works, the outstanding contributions made by the art pioneers to Chinese modern art. They jointly promoted the formation and development of the basics of the Chinese art circle in the 20th century.
